The descendant of the Fiat 500 Topolino which had been introduced in 1936, the Fiat Nuova 500 was first presented in Turin on 4 July 1957. Too spartan and lacking in power, the first series was not a success. Fiat therefore increased the size of its engine and added to the standard equipment of the versions which succeeded it, following the order of the letters of the alphabet. After the Normale ‘A’, the Sport ‘B’ and the Sunroof ‘C’ versions, the ‘D’ model (so named simply because it was the fourth version) was unveiled in 1960. Then, at the 1965 Geneva Motor Show, Fiat launched the 500 F, the letter ‘E’ having been assigned to an ‘America’ variant of the 500 D. The 500 F featured front-hinged doors, a larger windscreen and an improved interior finish. The success of the ‘F’ version led commentators of the time to observe that the 500 had come of age and convinced Fiat to keep it in production until 1975.
With its "suicide" doors and discoverable roof, this little Fiat 500 D is one of the first versions of this car whose exceptional career extended from 1957 to 1975. It has benefited from a quality restoration that perfectly enhances its beautiful blue colour and its interior covered with red leatherette of the most beautiful effect. The soft top is in perfect condition, the tires are new and the rims and chromes have a beautiful shine.
As well as the aesthetics, the mechanics have been revised and are functioning normally. Driving this extremely pleasant and playful car around town is a real treat, as evidenced by the many smiles and thumbs-up on our way. In town or in the country, this little car is perfectly versatile. With this estimate, it would be a shame not to seize the opportunity to acquire one of the greatest Italian myths…
