The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Super-Leicht, (Super-Light). The original idea was suggested by American importer Max Hoffman, who perceived a market for a toned-down Gran Prix car tailored to affluent performance enthusiasts in the booming post-war American market.

The fifth generation SL (code named R230) was launched in 2001 and facelifted in 2008. The all-new SL (initially just a 5.0-litre SL 500 version) featured a retractable hardtop (marketed as the Vario Roof) which had been launched on the SLK in 1997 to great critical acclaim. The facelifted SL model was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008. The SL received a new, more aggressive front end reflecting Mercedes's new design philosophy, with a pair of long power domes on the bonnet and a single-bar grille replacing the old three-bar effort. The SL was available with a selection of petrol engines including 2x V6 variants, 2x V8 variants and a V12. The SL500 was powered by a 5.5L V8 which produced 383bhp and 530Nm of torque. This effortless engine propelled the SL500 from 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds and on to an electronically limited 155mph.
