Description
The 'definitive' Ferrari style of the late 1970s/1980sA desirable carburettor steel-bodiedmodel in a classic colour combinationComing from a small private collection of classic cars; kept in a temperature and climate-controlled garagePurchasedby our vendor in 2015 following anut &bolt restoration by marque specialists 'QV London', including a new tan leather interiorComing with approximately 42,000 worth of invoicesThe 308 GTB, launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1975, was conceived as a direct replacement for the 246 Dino. Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, the man who styled some of the most iconic Ferraris including the Daytona, the new 308 had a rakish and attractive body which fused classic elements of Ferrari styling with a thoroughly modern design. Perhaps one of the most recognisable designs ever penned for Ferrari, the 308 was an instant hit and it came to define late 1970's and early 1980's sports cars. For the first two years of production, the body of the 308 was produced in fibreglass, before the decision was reached to change to steel. It shared a similar tube frame chassis to the original Dino and 308 GT4, with four-wheel, double wishbone, independent suspension and a transversely-mounted 2.9-litre DOHC four-cam, 90-degree V8 engine fed by four Weber 40DCNF carburettors. For the UK and Europe, the engine was dry-sumped, giving a power output of 255bhp which was enough to propel the 308 from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and give a top speed of 159 mph. In the early 1980s, the decision was taken to replace the carburettors with fuel injection, reducing the engine output to 214bhp. The 'Targa' topped 308 GTS arrived in 1977 and was perhaps best known for its regular appearances on the television series Magnum, P.I'. The 308 was manufactured in both GTB and GTS (Spyder) forms from 1977 to 1985, before being replaced by the 328.The car presented here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive, Ferrari 308 GTS from 1978 and consequently is a steel-bodied carburettor model. The car is being offered from a very particular privateer vendor, who has a small and discerning collection of choice classic cars. He purchased this car in 2015 following a complete 'nut & bolt' restoration, including engine and mechanical components,by Ferrari specialists QV London, where it starred on their website under featured restorations titled Back to Red. This exacting work also included the fitting of a brand-new tan leather interior, and there are invoices totalling over 42,000 for this project. This stunning 308 has wanted for nothing, having covered only 2,000 miles since its restoration/engine rebuild, and is as nice as youd expect. Having covered just 63,000 miles, which is negated somewhat by the thoroughness of the full restoration, this is a best-of-breed example. If youve hankered after owning a real Ferrari, then this is the right car for you. The hard work has been done, it just needs to be used and enjoyed!
