After almost 20 years in production, Aston’s immensely successful V8 was updated for the 1990s as the Virage, a model described by Company Chairman Victor Gauntlett as, ‘one of the most, if not the most, important newcomers in Aston Martin’s 70-year history.’ The Virage’s body design was entrusted to Royal College of Art tutors Ken Greenley and John Heffernan while the existing Lagonda chassis and suspension were used in heavily revised form for the new car. Recognising the need to extend the V8 engine’s life and make it suitable for all markets, Aston Martin commissioned Callaway Engineering, of Connecticut, to undertake a comprehensive re-development programme.
