When the Lancia Aurelia was unveiled at the 1950 Turin Motor Show, it was not the car’s looks that stunned the motoring press. The Aurelia’s somewhat unexciting pillar-less four door bodywork was masking the most progressive car of the period: the first car in the world to use a V6 engine and the first car to use radial-ply tyres. Its semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension was to be widely copied (as was the basis of all its components) later by other major producers and the use of a rear transaxle in a production car predated its use by other manufacturers by twenty years. Here was the ultimate technology in a road car that was to lead, within four years, to the quickest Formula
