Citroen‘s classic flagship from the 1970s, the SM was a result of the French manufacturer‘s 1968 take-over of Italian supercar maker Maserati. Innovative and complex, the stylish SM combined Maserati‘s engine prowess with Citroen‘s chassis technology; beneath the large, low-drag 2+2 coupé, the compact, alloy quad-camshaft V6 - in essence three quarters of Maserati‘s proven V8 - was mated to a Citroen five-speed manual gearbox, while the front wheel drive chassis boasted hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension via front double wishbones and rear trailing arms.
