Initial design work had commenced upon Lotus Project M72 for an extensively remodeled Esprit Turbo rear-engined coupé, as early as 1977. But the company's engineering commitment to the controversial De Lorean project delayed such developments until February 1980 when the Esprit Turbo prototype was finally unveiled at the Essex Lotus Formula 1 launch in London's Albert Hall.
First deliveries of the new Lotus Type 82 Esprit Turbo were then delayed until August that year. The new model was powered by a 2174cc Type 910 long-stroke engine, developed from the preceding 1973cc Type 907 unit. This 16-valve engine was equipped with dry-sump lubrication in road racing style, while mounted just behind the cylinder block and above the clutch bell-housing was a turbocharger from Garrett AiResearch in the United States.
