While Gooding lists 22 Ferraris in its 2011 Pebble Beach catalogue, including the potentially record-setting 1957 Testa Rossa prototype, this year’s sale also has a variety of other entries from other marques, including Jaguar, Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz.
Covering the cars from Maranello first of all, in addition to the 250 TR (about which you can read a fascinating Classic Driver reader’s story elsewhere), there are some other incredible cars at (broadly) 2011-market estimates. Entries such as the 1966 275 GTB Alloy Long Nose ($900,000 - $1,300,000) and the 1972 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' Spider ($1,100,000 - $1,300,000) are classic, Monterey-week fare.
They are joined by a 1962 250 GT SWB Berlinetta (a steel, Lusso version for $3,500,000 - $4,500,000) and one of the amazing Superamerica Coupé Aerodinamicos (a 1963 400 at $1,200,000 - $1,500,000).
Unusually, there is only one example of Ferrari’s arch racing rival of the early 1960s, Shelby. The 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 Factory Team Car, for $2,400,000 - $2,800,000, is an extremely original car, with period racing history driven by Ken Miles and others.
Even better, it’s red, rather than the more familiar metallic blue.

In addition to the Sheryl Crow Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, the great Stuttgart marque, so popular in the USA, numbers another 10 entries: cars such as three 300 SL Roadsters (ranging in price from $475,000 to $900,000), the $60,000 - $80,000, 1971 280 SL ‘Pagoda’ and the 1967 600 SWB, at $90,000 - $120,000.
There’s also a 1927 Mercedes-Benz S-Type 26/180 Sportwagen, an imposing supercharged car in fire engine red, delivered new to New York in 1927. $5,500,000 - $6,500,000 is the estimate – big price, very big car.

Other pre-War entries of note include the 1937 Bentley 4 1/4-Litre Sedanca Coupé ($300,000 - $400,000), the 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Series V Gran Sport ($1,500,000 - $2,200,000) and any one of the 'Great Gatsby cars' from Packard, Duesenberg and Lincoln.
There are three David Brown Astons in Gooding’s 2011 Pebble Beach sale. Even allowing for currency variations, the estimates – to a UK resident’s eyes, at least – are ‘ambitious’. But that’s only on the face of it, perhaps, as $650,000 - $750,000 for a 1954 DB2/4 Drop Head Coupé might appear strong – until you see it has coachbuilt bodywork by Graber of Switzerland.

And, okay, the 1965 DB5 IS left-hand drive, and WAS originally delivered to the US and HAS won concours awards. So maybe $675,000 - $775,000 (that’s £420k - £485k, or 472k – 540k euros...) is not so wrong.
Come late Sunday evening, at the end of this year’s Monterey week, we shall all find out.
