Description
Estimated Price: £38,000 - £48,000
The 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI RA-R stands as the most focused and exclusive iteration of the GD-chassis STi. Developed by Subaru Tecnica International (STi), only 300 units were produced exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. It was conceived as a lightweight, high performance model with a specification intended to prioritise driving dynamics. The RA-R designation, meaning 'Record Attempt – Racing', reflects its motorsport-influenced development. It was not a typical trim level, but an homologation-style special designed for owners seeking mechanical purity and road-going performance.
Powered by the 2-litre EJ207 turbocharged flat-four engine, the RA-R produces 320PS at 6,400rpm and 318Nm of torque. A twin-scroll, ball-bearing turbocharger and lightweight, low back-pressure exhaust contribute to its sharp throttle response and high revving nature.
Power is delivered through a 6-speed, close-ratio manual gearbox and Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which incorporates a Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) alongside mechanical limited-slip differentials at both the front and rear. The chassis was significantly enhanced with STi-tuned Bilstein dampers, reinforced subframes, uprated coil springs and thicker stabiliser bars. Braking is handled by Brembo large six-piston front and two-piston rear callipers, with stopping power matched to the car’s dynamic capabilities. It features lightweight 18" forged alloy wheels helping keep the curb weight down to approximately 1,390kg.
The interior was stripped out and designed for functionality with Recaro bucket seats and an STi-branded Momo steering wheel underscoring the car's purpose. To save weight, the model was not fitted with a sunroof and air-conditioning was offered only as a delete-option feature.
Offered here is a remarkably well preserved example of the 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STi RA-R, sourced directly from Japan in 2016 by a respected and highly experienced Subaru specialist on behalf of a private Collector. Manufactured in 2006, finished in Pure White paint code (51E), this example had clearly been well maintained and remained largely unmodified prior to export.
Upon arrival in the UK, the car underwent a full inspection and was correctly registered, receiving the registration number KO56 RXW. It now wears a model-specific private registration, WR06 RAR, which will remain with the vehicle and forms part of the sale.
Accompanied by a substantial and well documented history file, the RA-R’s record supports consistent and careful maintenance, as well as verifying the mileage from new. The overall condition is exceptional throughout, reflecting both the quality of its original preservation and the level of care it has received since. It will be presented to auction with a fresh MOT.
This is a highly capable modern classic performance car, offering an increasingly rare blend of mechanical purity and driver engagement. From cold start to warm-up and full boost, the experience is unmistakably analogue — the engine note, turbo spool and mechanical differentials delivering genuine driver involvement.
The RA-R is widely regarded as the finest handling version of the GD-platform STi. As the final lightweight, analogue-focused STi of its generation, the RA-R is now considered the definitive collector-grade model within the Subaru performance lineage.
