Description

Furlonger are delighted to offer this Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ finished in the highly desirable combination of Azzuro Metallizzato with Rosso leather. Chassis no. 13421 was ordered new via Maranello Concessionaires on the 3rd of June 1969 by a Mr J. C. Wardale, opting for factory fitted air conditioning and requested a Blaupunkt Koln K Radio with twin speakers on the parcel shelf, an 8-track stereo tape player, and Fiamm air horns. Just 1,284 Ferrari 365 GTB/4s were built, 122 ‘Plexiglass’s’ and this example is one of a mere 34 UK supplied right-hand drive examples.

Chassis no. 13421 retains a comprehensive history file including numerous letters of correspondence between Mr Wardale, Maranello Concessionaires and Ferrari S.P.A. from his initial order placement. Further to his special requests regarding the radio, he wrote a letter stating that he would like the Ferrari factory to supply and fit the unit rather than having them fitted by the supplying dealer. This was due to his plan of collecting the car from the Ferrari Factory and driving it on the continent for a few weeks prior to returning to the UK. Humorously, Mr Wardale felt that the ‘sweet music of the engine is hardly sufficient compensation in itself for a nagging wife and back seat driver!’ After its completion at the factory, chassis no. 13421 was collected by Mr Wardale in Maranello and used regularly throughout the UK and Europe. In December of 1970, the car returned to the factory to have some work conducted.

Naturally, this Ferrari 365 GTB/4 would change hands between like-minded enthusiasts throughout its life and was exported to the USA and purchased by a Mr Jeffery Bennet, a former Mayor who resided in California in the early 2000s. In the mid-2000s, chassis no. 13421 joined one of the finest private collections in the world, sitting among some of the rarest and desirable road cars and competition race cars. In 2012, the car was then sold to another gentleman who entrusted a renowned marque specialist to conduct a comprehensive, no-expense-spared restoration. The owner requested that the car be repainted and trimmed in some newly picked but period correct colours. The exterior was refinished in its current shade of Azzurro Metallizzato and the interior reupholstered in Rosso leather. The ‘Daytona’ was extensively restored over a 2-year period and shortly after completion was entered into numerous Concours events. The car was shown at Salon Prive Concours d’Elegance in September 2014 where it achieved 3rd in class K: ‘The Great Gran Turismos’ and went on to win 1st in class at the Ferrari Owners’ Club National Meet and Concours in July 2015. Chassis no. 13421 was awarded Ferrari Classiche Certification in 2015 and retains its ‘Red Book’ with the car’s history.

Now offered for sale, this Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is likely one of the finest available in the world today. Comprehensively restored and reconfigured in an exceptionally rare period correct colour combination, accompanied by a meticulously documented service and ownership history, chassis no. 13421’s desirability is furthered by being 1 of just 34 ‘Plexiglass’ UK right-hand drive examples. Used sparingly since its restoration and passing through the hands of like-minded collectors, this car presents superbly in all regards and would be suitable for the very finest of collections.
