Description

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Arizona event, 24 January 2025.

  • Believed to have first been owned by West Coast Ferrari importer William F. Harrah
  • Originally finished in Blu Dino Metallizzato over Beige Connolly leather
  • Desirable “E-Series” example with twin Weber carburetors
  • Factory equipped with air conditioning, power windows, and Cromodora wheels
  • Documented chain of ownership from new

Unveiled at the 1969 Turin Motor Show, the Dino 246 preserved much of the charm and mid-engine driving dynamics of the outgoing 206 while introducing several key enhancements. The most notable upgrades included a more powerful 2.4-liter V-6 engine, transition from aluminum to steel body construction, and subtle extension of the wheelbase. In 1971, Ferrari further refined the Dino with the introduction of the “E-Series” featuring enlarged dual-Weber DCNF7 carburetors that boosted the model’s top speed to nearly 150 mph.

Completed 17 January 1973, this fantastic E-Series Dino 246 GT left Maranello cloaked in the magnificent livery of Blu Dino Metallizzato (106-A-72) over Beige Connolly (VM 3234) leather. Specified as a left-hand-drive model destined for the US market, chassis 04566 was factory-equipped with air conditioning, power windows, and standard Cromodora wheels. Following completion and its arrival Stateside, 04566 was sent for distribution via William F. Harrah’s pivotal Modern Classic Motors of Reno, Nevada.

Upon arrival, Harrah must have been particularly smitten with 04566 as he reportedly retained it for his personal collection. Documentation on file shows the car being retained by Mr. Harrah’s firm into the early 1980s when it was acquired by another Reno-based Ferrari cognoscenti. Reams of accompanying invoices document the car’s treasured life of display and faithful service across a short chain of custodians, including winning the Dino Award at the Ferrari Club of America Pacific Region’s Concorso Italiano in 2014. Refinished in its present shade of red during the 1990s, 04566 is believed to retain its factory Beige Connolly leather trim and is offered with an extensive history file that includes its original warranty card and sales paperwork, service invoices, and owner’s books in a proper leather wallet.

Highly documented and with known history from new, 04566 offers a phenomenal opportunity for aspiring tifosi, allowing them to enjoy a blue-chip Ferrari immediately while leaving the possibility of a concours-worthy return to its dazzling original livery always within reach. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/az25/.
