The world premiere of the Mercedes-Benz 129-series SL at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show marked the arrival of a completely new car, following in the footsteps of the innovative 350 SL from 18 years earlier. The 129 SL impressed with a harmonious design that blended sportiness, comfort, and elegance. Its radiator grille, traditionally a defining feature of SL models, was reinterpreted, integrating the cowling into the bonnet with a chrome star and anodized aluminum lamellas.
Significant improvements in safety were introduced, including a reinforced body structure and the innovative automatic rollover bar. This system, activated by an electromagnetic sensor, deployed within 0.3 seconds in the event of a rollover, offering enhanced passenger protection. The body's stability was further reinforced by high-strength materials and a specially designed A-pillar construction. The new SL was also lighter, with a body structure weighing only 20 kilograms more than its predecessor, thanks to advanced lightweight materials.
Compelled by this innovative new SL, this SL was purchased new by the Stephens family. Finished in sleek Blue Black Metallic (199) with a Mushroom leather interior, this car features numerous amenities. These include the automatic climate anti-lock brakes, accelerated slip regulation (ASR), headlight wipers/washers, and electrically adjustable steering column. Likely shortly after new, the exterior badging was replaced with period-correct gold badges. Remarkedly well-preserved, this 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL, with just under 70,000 miles, offers a fantastic opportunity to acquire a largely original icon.
