It’s a common belief among petrol heads that you always want either the first or last cars built from a particular model’s production run. While early cars often feature the purest designs and are most closely aligned with their creator’s intentions, the later cars benefit from a wealth of updates and improvements made throughout a model’s life. With that in mind, you could hardly hope to do better than the second-to-last Porsche 904 GTS ever made, which is currently for sale in the Classic Driver Market with Grand Prix Classics.
Built in 1965, chassis 904-107 was put to work immediately after leaving the factory by Porsche Hekla of Iceland for cold-weather testing and promotional. After its stint in the Land of Fire and Ice, this Silver Blue 904 GTS turned from ice queen into a track warrior, competing with its second Ohio-based owner in a range of SCCA track events throughout the Midwest. After passing between a few more American owners before stints in Germany and then the UK, this 904 GTS made its way back to the USA in 2016 and has resided there since.
While this example’s back story is certainly fascinating, this Porsche’s status as a very late production 904 GTS gives it a host of benefits over other specimens of the breed. As third of only four original Series 2 specification 904 Carrera GTSs built, this Porsche was fitted with a reinforced chassis, a centre-fill gas tank, short doors with rare pull-up plastic side windows, upgraded brakes, and a reshaped rear with a slight Kamm tail. Recently treated to a sympathetic restoration by DK Engineering, this 904 GTS is currently powered by a 2-litre 911 race engine, while a rebuilt 2.0 Liter 4-cam engine is available as a spare. Despite its period race history, this 904 remains in wonderful condition, retaining both the original body and frame, thanks to a lack of any serious accidents in its past. In fact, the list of original items on this stunning Porsche is too long to mention here, so we encourage you to take a look at the full listing with Grand Prix Classics below!
