Description

Often billed as a Jaguar XJ copy the De Tomaso Deauville (whose rear axle indeed stems from a Jaguar MK10), is a genuine, Italian designed and developped saloon from one of the more illustrious Italian manufacturers. Chassis and suspension were developed by Gian Paolo Dallara and the coachwork design stems from Tom Tjaarda, then head of design at Carrozzeria Ghia with the engine as well as the automatic gearbox being bought in from Ford. With a new prize of 64’500 francs, a Deauville cost 10’000 francs more than the V12 top model from Jaguar, certainly one of the reasons why only 244 examples found buyers. Our example is one of those and was most probably imported into Switzerland already as a new car and 1st registered on the 1st of February 1976 in the Ticino Canton. At the end of 2005 the De Tomaso was taken over by the vendor and used occasionally. In 2012 he decided to have the coachwork and interior of his saloon restored followed by a complete disassembly. Beginning of 2013, a specialist was commissioned to prepare the car mechanically and perform the reassembly. All the work has been documented by photographs and receipts for around 70’000 Swiss francs are available. Since its completion, the exotic Italian has only been driven around 500 kilometres and today presented itself in very good condition. The Ford Cleveland V8 with 270 horsepower is running without any issues, as can be expected, and the automatic gearbox is shifting smoothly. The last Veteran MOT was completed in June 2013. For a Swiss buyer, the Deauville receives a new MOT.
