Description
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Munich event, 23 November 2024.
- One of 242 BMW 315/1 Roadsters produced from 1934 to 1937
- Delivered new to Augsburg, Bavaria in April 1935
- Benefits from a complete restoration carried out by René Große, the expert German craftsman; verified by invoices on file totalling over €550,000
- Powered by an uprated BMW 319/1 motor; accompanied by a spare engine and gearbox
The rarest derivative of BMW’s popular 315 model was the 315/1 Roadster, which retained the same 1.5-litre straight-six engine as the standard car yet was equipped with three side-draft carburettors. The model featured independent front suspension, a live rear axle with semi-elliptical springs, and hydraulic shock absorbers. Just 242 examples of the 315/1 Roadster were built, with many competing in circuit races and hill climbs.
As confirmed by an accompanying Birth Certificate from BMW, the example offered here was delivered to its first owner in Augsburg, Bavaria, on 14 April 1935, in Green over Grey upholstery. The earliest history of the BMW is unknown, but it is recorded to have been registered in 1960 in Switzerland, where the 315/1 found three owners before the consignor purchased the car in 2014
Under their instruction, the BMW was presented to René Große, the Wusterwitz-based expert restorer, for complete renovation. Invoices on file detail the restoration carried out in full between 2015 and 2024. In total, over €550,000 has been spent to finish the car in the fine condition it is presented in today.
Fitted with an uprated 319/1 motor and accompanied by a spare (non-matching but period-correct) engine and gearbox, the opportunity to own such an immaculately restored 315/1 Roadster is rarely as enticing as this.
