- One of just 200 examples of the revered and race-bred 1800 Ti/SA produced
- One of four cars delivered new to Sweden; boasts period competition history

BMW produced just 200 examples of the Ti/SA—lighter and boasting 20 PS over the 1800 Ti—to battle smaller Alfa Romeos and Lotus Cortinas in touring car racing. To allocate the limited run, prospective customers had to present a race licence to secure an order.
Accordingly, almost all Ti/SAs enjoyed competitive use. One of only four cars delivered new to Sweden, chassis 995074 was campaigned by first owner Karl Torsten Backström in ice racing. Given they were driven hard, engine replacements for Ti/SAs were common. This 1965 example is fitted with a correct-type 1,773-cc motor and equipped with a race-specification ZF gearbox. Notably, it retains the rare “TISA1” cylinder head and induction manifolds.
Remaining in Sweden, chassis 995074 was restored in the 1990s. In June 2015, the car was added to The Munich Masterpieces Collection. Exclusive to the Ti/SA, the factory Walsall steering wheel, two-tone Restall bucket seats, and protruding central tachometer remain. The front panel has been replaced at some stage, meaning the car wears a restamped chassis number. However, the original chassis plate is present.
All bidders should satisfy themselves with the originality of this 1800 Ti/SA prior to sale. For more information, please speak to an RM Sotheby’s specialist.
