Description

Chassis No. B9470148 LRXFE

Engine No. 1178-G13KA

Body No. JAL 550124

There was a thrilling time in post-war automotive history when a "hybrid" meant something entirely different, typically the sporting nature and attractive design of a European body and chassis, married with the raw power of an American V8 powerplant. The Sunbeam Tiger, much like the Shelby Cobra with which it shares a certain degree of parentage, was one especially notable example, as the Rootes Group's sprightly little Alpine was outfitted with Ford's venerable 260 cubic-inch small block V8. The combination of a short wheelbase sports car, four-speed transmission, and powerful V8 was downright thrilling and certainly unlike anything most motorists had seen or experienced.

Offered here is a very early production example of the first series Sunbeam Tiger, benefiting from decades in the mild Southern California climate. The 148th Tiger produced, this fine example was assembled at Rootes Motors Limited during late-summer of 1964, as a left-hand drive export model, finished in Forest Green as it appears today, fitted with the potent 260 cu-in Ford V8 engine, and most likely destined for the Tiger-hungry U.S. market.

By the 1990s the Tiger was acquired by a gentleman residing in Villa Park, Southern California, from whom the consignor acquired the car. A repaint in the as-delivered Forest Green exterior color - or British Racing Green as it is frequently referred to - has been carried out in recent times, while original paint is traceable under interior panels. The Tiger has a feeling of a solid and cared-for car, displaying good panel fit and a solid undercarriage. Chrome and brightwork is partially original, and inside the cockpit the black interior present with a blend of retrimmed and original pieces, while original Jaeger gauges remain in place. A new convertible top has recently been fitted. Sunbeam Tigers are great fun to drive, offering plenty of power, matched by capable handling characteristics, and adequate stopping power by disc brakes at the front. A lovely Southern California Tiger Mk 1, this car is ready to take on twisty backroads.
