Description

Chassis No. AR3060300

Introduced at the 54th Turin Motor Show in November 1972, the 1600 Junior Zagato was an evolution of its predecessor, the 1300 Junior Zagato, with notable improvements in both aesthetics and functionality. Unlike the earlier model, based on the shortened version of the Spider 1300 Junior, the 1600 Junior Zagato used the unaltered underpinnings of the 1600 Spider. The most visible change in the 1600 Junior Zagato was its extended tail, which accommodated a larger fuel tank and featured a revised rear design. This included a more pronounced sloping roofline and a redesigned back panel, incorporating a bulge in the lower part of the rear bumper to house the spare tire. These modifications not only improved functionality but also enhanced the car's aerodynamic profile.

Under the hood, the 1600 Junior Zagato boasted a 1,570 cc engine that delivered a substantial increase in power over the 1300 Junior Zagato. With an output of 108 horsepower, the car benefitted from increased performance overall. These performance enhancements were complemented by interior updates, including a wood-rimmed steering wheel with metal spokes and integrated horn buttons. The 1600 Junior Zagato production lasted until 1973, with only 402 units produced.

Starting in 2018, under the current owner's direction, a complete restoration of this 1973 Alfa Romeo 1600 Junior Zagato began. This process involved stripping the bodywork to bare metal for proper preparation before refinishing it in its factory-delivered Champagne Metallizzato color. While the bodywork was underway, the other components of the car received the same level of attention, including rebuilding the suspension, brakes, engine, and transmission. The interior was also reupholstered as originally specified Nero but upgraded from leatherette to leather. In total, over 83,000€ was spent during a two-year period to return the car back to nearly new condition – documented by restoration invoices and photos.

As presented today, this magnificent 1973 Alfa Romeo 1600 Junior Zagato is beautifully presented in its originally specified color scheme. As one of just 402 examples produced, this car offers a compelling blend of critically acclaimed driving dynamics with a rarely seen Zagato design
