Description

Registration number: FO-34-53

Do you know the song "King of the Road" by the fantastic Roger Miller? Besides this legendary song, the name was also used for a very specific car, more on that later.
The Ford Mustang was so popular upon its introduction in 1964 that Ford dealers didn't know what to do. People were so enthusiastic about the beautifully designed pony car that orders flew in. This was no surprise: the Mustang was relatively very low-priced, offered space for at least four people, a choice of many engines and trims, all wrapped in extremely attractive bodies.

It didn't take long before the legendary Carroll Shelby saw opportunities with the Mustang. He saw the possibilities to make the Mustang a high-performance car that would leave the competition far behind, both on the street and on the track. He didn't limit himself to just the engine but had a clear vision: the car should embody a perfect balance of power, style, and luxury. With this vision, the Shelby GT500 was created, which was immediately a completely different car than the Shelby GT350 from 1965. In short, the GT500 provided a new perspective on the muscle car.
Initially, the Shelby GT500KR was equipped with a 428 cubic inch V8 engine, modified suspension, larger brakes, and a number of features that made it a balanced muscle car. In 1968, the Shelby underwent significant changes. The engine was now equipped with a NASCAR 428 Cobra Jet V8 with different pistons. It is claimed that the engines delivered much more power than the specified values! Back to the Roger Miller song. Do you know what KR stands for? King of the Road and the nickname of this Shelby.

In Brummen, we have a beautiful Shelby GT500 KR convertible in the collection. This is a fully restored and overhauled example in very good condition. Only 318 examples were built in 1968, making this Shelby extra special and therefore highly sought after. Have you seen the photos yet? The original purchase invoice is still present with this Shelby! That really makes us happy. The restoration and overhaul work are also documented in detail and provided in an extensive folder with this car. A very nice feature is that the Marti Report is present as well.

With a beautiful bodywork in good condition, we can be brief about the exterior. It simply looks very nice with beautiful paint and body panels with correct fittings. The exterior contains the correct details that are so important for a Shelby of this caliber, and the whole, ranging from wheels, bumpers to chrome parts, is really good.

The interior is also in a beautiful condition. The various parts are all correct, the upholstery is of high quality, and the whole, including carpets, dashboard, and roof, is in excellent condition.

Once on the road, we can conclude two things. First, this Shelby drives superbly, as you would expect from an example of this level. Second, the overhaul work is so well done that this car is technically in a state as if it left the factory in 1968. The engine is a masterpiece, simply a gem of an engine. When we turn the key, we can hardly conclude anything other than that a V8 produces one of the most beautiful engine sounds since the introduction of internal combustion engines.
