5 collector cars to put into your garage this week

The Classic Driver Market never fails to amaze us its the sheer variety of head-turning metal, and this week’s Market Finds is no exception. An Italian police car, a 1990s French design icon, and a British GT that will have you green with envy await!

Crikey, it’s the Italian Rozzers!

As the recent and proud owner of an Alfa Romeo 75, I can tell you that there’s nothing quite like squeezing the accelerator and listening to the incredible sound of that 3.0-litre Busso V6. The Squadra Corse della Polizia di Stato (the Italian Police Force’s racing team) clearly agreed, adding this example built by the official Alfa Romeo Corse department to their roster in 1989.

This Group A-specification Alfa Romeo 75 entered no less than 16 national rallies between 1989 and 1992, no doubt treating the locals to its sonorous V6 howl wherever it went. While this boxy Ermanno Cressoni-designed 75 might not seem like the most athletic automobile on earth, it shares much of its running gear with the notorious Alfa Romeo SZ, meaning it benefits from a transaxle gearbox and in-board rear brakes for improved weight distribution and handling. Recently treated to an engine and gearbox rebuild, this rare super saloon is now looking for a new home!

Green over Green over Green

It’s no secret that we’re fans of both green cars and green interiors at Classic Driver, and when the two are combined you get our idea of a match made in heaven. Illustrating our point beautifully is this factory-built ‘Wide Body’ 1992 Aston Martin Virage Volante finished in Galloway Green with a green Connolly hide interior and, you guessed it, a green Mohair convertible hood.

Handbuilt by Aston Martin in 1992, this example was the launch car for the 2+2 Virage Volante displayed at the 1992 Geneva Motor Show. Originally finished in Giallo Fly over a tan interior, this manual Virage was sold to the legendary Brunei collection after Aston Martin had extensively reworked it to become the first of just 19 6.3-litre Wide Body Virage Volantes. In 2016 this example benefitted from a comprehensive bare-metal restoration, at which point it was given its current outstanding colour combination. Now showing just under 25,000 miles, this extremely rare Aston Martin could be your perfect summer grand tourer.

Soap Opera

The B5-generation Audi RS4 Avant is soap bar styling at its finest, masterfully combining organic curves with just enough aggression to show that this 375 horsepower wagon means business. This example from 2001 is an excellent ambassador for the breed, having been steadily enjoyed and fastidiously maintained throughout its lifetime. It now shows just under 80,000 miles, although its appearance is closer to that of a car with half the mileage.

Finished in Avus Silver over a black leather interior that boasts Recaro seats, this RS4 perfectly blends comfort and performance. The Cosworth-fettled twin-turbocharged 2.7-litre V6 is the real star of the show, which combined with a six-speed manual allows this super estate to hit 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds; still rapid by today’s standards. As far as modern classic daily drivers go, the BS5 RS4 is right at the top of our most wanted list.

Sacré Bleu

2024 is the original Renault Twingo’s comeback year, and this Overseas Blue example from 1993 has us dreaming of sun-drenched drives along the French Riviera. However, even if you live nowhere near the Mediterranean, these little city cars are guaranteed to inject some joy into your life — just look at those funky fabric seats!

This rare ragtop has been meticulously cared for by its single owner since new, and now shows just 47,225 miles on the clock. Even better, it recently benefited from new tyres and a new lick of paint, ensuring nothing but blue skies and joy rides for its next custodian. With pristine examples such as this becoming increasingly difficult to source, we wouldn’t wait to add one of these French automotive icons to your collection!

White Widow

The 918 catalogue wasn’t short on outstanding colours — Acid Green and Viola Black spring to mind — but there’s something just right about a Porsche finished in Grand Prix White. It may come as a surprise, then, that this 2016 Porsche 918 Spyder is one of only two finished in the paint-to-sample hue. Adding to its appeal, this example was specified with all the most important elements of the Weissach Pack, albeit with the crucial addition of the front-lift system, significantly increasing the usability of this holy trinity hypercar.

Inside, you’ll find a leather-to-sample Dark Grey, Stone Grey, and Silver interior loaded with extras, including a Burmester Audio System to keep you entertained when you’re not enjoying this 918’s 875 horsepower hybrid V8 powertrain. With just 691 miles on the clock, this 918 remains in immaculate condition and would be perfectly at home in any of the world’s finest car collections.
