When discussing the finest Italian automobiles of the late 1960s and early 1970s, three cars top everyone’s list: the Lamborghini Miura, the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, and the Maserati Ghibli.

Styled at Carrozzeria Ghia by Giorgetto Giugiaro and named (like its sisters the Mistral and later the Khamsin), after a Sahara Desert wind, the Ghibli was an immediate success, especially in Maserati’s largest market, the USA, where it became the ‘must have’ car for the rich and famous of the late 1960s, gaining a reputation for being not only a car to arrive in, but extremely impressive to drive as well.

In 1970 Maserati extended the Ghibli range with an optional 4.9-liter V-8, which provided an additional 25 horsepower.

Offered concurrently with the original 4.7-liter version, the new SS 4.9 was catalogued with chassis numbers integrated into overall Ghibli numbering, and Maserati Classiche confirms that only 425 Ghibli SS Coupes were built.

Ghibli production ended in 1972 after a total of 1.280 examples had been built.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

According to the Maserati Classiche build record, this Ghibli was completed at Maserati’s Modena workshops in 1969 and was it was delivered to it’s 1st owner in Modena in the 11th August 1969.

The first owner was the Conte Franco Grandi, son of the former Italian Foreign Minister Dino Grandi, known for his role in overthrowing Mussolini.

This Ghibli SS Coupé is recorded to have been manufactured in August 1969, according to the accompanying Certificate of Origine by Maserati Classiche, issued in August 2015.

It was built in a beautiful and rare exterior colour of “Bleu Medio” with a White Connolly hide interior.

The attractive specification was completed by the Blaupunkt Radio and a leather steering wheel.

Under the bonnet, the Maserati was built with a 4.9-litre V8 engine paired with a the extremely rare and sought after five-speed manual ZF gearbox.

To make it easier to manoeuvre, the car originally has power steering from the factory.

Later in its life, in 1989, this example was purchased in the USA by a UK collector, a Mr. Jones, who initiated a restoration and retained the car until 2015.

This Maserati remained with him for Twenty-Seven years.

It was then sold to a Belgian owner in 2016 .

The Belgian owner sent the Ghibli SS to a Maserati specialist for a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration, including a fabulous refinish in the original color of Bleu Medio, and re-upholstery of the leather interior.

The quality of the restoration was impressive and the car still looks in a magnificent condition.

Additional work included re-chroming the brightwork and installing a replacement windscreen.

The car was purchased by its former owner in 2017 and later shipped to Modena, Italy, for Maserati Classiche certification, which was awarded in March 2022.

The car has a ZF five-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, servo-assisted disc brakes, 15″ Campagnolo alloy wheels, a Ferrero steering wheel (an option), power steering, and air conditioning.

Additional features include headrests, rear storage compartments beneath red-trimmed cushions, a lockable glovebox, and power windows.

The starter and alternator have been rebuilt, the radiator re-cored, and the fuel system refreshed with replacement pumps and lines.

The water and oil pumps were rebuilt in 2020, while the carburettors were revised at the same time.

A service in 2023 included adjusting the carburettors and replacing the water pump cable and valve-cover seals.

The five-speed manual transmission was overhauled during the refurbishment, and the clutch assembly was replaced.

The rear axle was rebuilt and fitted with a limited-slip differential, and the driveshaft U-joints were replaced.

The suspension has been refreshed by installing Koni shock absorbers, and the leaf springs have been rebuilt together with the control arms and other components.

Additional work includes rebuilding the power steering pump, replacing steering linkage components, and installing a black-painted stainless-steel exhaust system.

The rear axle limiting straps were replaced in 2023.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

The Maserati Ghibli is in a very nice condition.

The paint of the car can be considered very beautiful.

The different aluminium and chrome parts are still in a beautiful condition.

All other aspects of the exterior is very nice.

All the glasses are in a nice condition without big signs of use.

Details such as the wheels are all in very nice condition. This car looks so beautiful and fresh. Difficult to describe but immediately clear when you see the car.

CONDITION INTERIOR

Also the interior of the car is in fantastic condition.

The Ferrero leather steering wheel still looks amazing, showing no signs of damage on the wood and metal.

The Red Connolly leather interior shows very minimal sign of use as well as the carpets.

All key items in the interior such as the meters, gauges, knobs, emblems window handles, steering wheel etc. are in a very nice condition.

When you take a seat in the Ghibli you immediately feel yourself part of the 1969 Italian Job movie.

The seat position is difficult to describe as one has to feel it but believe us, when you take position in this Ghibli you immediately understand that this is a very special car which is very special to drive.

Overall the interior has an excellent feeling.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The car starts easily, releasing a raw V8 exhaust note that was available in Italy only from Maserati.

Power in all gears is quite impressive, 335 bhp in a car from 1970 is quite impressive after all.

Gearbox is smooth and reliable. The car feels fast, but controllable. Within just a few miles confidence builds to even the newest drivers as the 4 carburetors team up to deliver more and more pleasure with each accumulating mile.

We believe the Ghibli is one of the most stunning sports cars ever made, the Ghibli was a worthy rival for the Ferrari Daytona and represents exceptional value for money today, just as it did 40 years ago.
