Description

On September 16, 1956, Porsche factory team driver Richard von Frankenberg piloted a modified Porsche 550 at the Avus track in the GP Berlin event. Among the first asphalt-paved roads in the world, the Avus circuit is famed for its dramatic forty-three degree banked curve, which became known as "the wall of death." Von Frankenberg's Porsche, an experimental Type 645, which he nicknamed "Mickey Maus," was built upon Porsche's chassis 550-0098. It had been modified with a shortened wheelbase and narrowed wheel track which made the car very difficult to control on the banked curve. Mid-race, von Frankenberg and Mickey Maus exited the top of the curve, with von Frankenberg being ejected from the car, and coming to rest in the top of a large acacia bush, and escaped the incident with only minor injuries. The Porsche was unfortunately destroyed in the incident. Sculptor Lawrence Braun captures this incredible moment with his work Miracle of the Avus, with the work offered being the 12th of the 14 numbered pieces cast in the edition. Dimensions: 21.25 in. high including base.
