Founded in 1858 by Jean-Baptiste Labourdette, Carrosserie Henri Labourdette was known for lightweight and elegant coachwork, whether on grand prewar French touring automobiles or a hunting carriage, such as the dog cart presented here. These carriages were given the “dog cart” moniker as they were used by sport shooters in the mid-1800s. A box under the seat held retriever dogs. The carriage’s wheel hubs are inscribed with “Labourdette Paris.” According to notes on file, this dog cart was used at De Horsten, which at the time was a royal estate in Wassenaar, Netherlands. Subsequently, it was owned by Jan de Neree from whom the Mullin Collection acquired the carriage.
