Description

Chassis No. 324116

When introduced in 1950, the Type 2 Microbus was only the second vehicle design offered to the public by Volkswagen and their first commercial offering. The simple underpinnings led to desirable economic running costs and ease of service thanks to the ever-expanding Volkswagen dealer network. Initially offered in just two body styles, its versatility proved so great that numerous other variants have been made over the ensuing decades. With its early iconic styling and practical functionality, it truly became an all-around cultural icon of the era.

This particular Microbus was ordered new, in the top-of-the-line Sunroof Deluxe trim, offering a total of 23 windows and a large fabric sunroof, intended as being the ideal vehicle for Alpine touring. As an early example, this Microbus features the outwardly hinged 'barn doors' instead of the single sliding door found on later models. The car was restored under previous ownership and today presents in remarkable condition. During the restoration, the body was refinished in its original Chestnut Brown over Sealing Wax Red color scheme, separated by brightly finished aluminum trim with a red center strip. The interior received the same treatment and was refinished in Light Brown, just as constructed by Volkswagen in 1958.

Subtle upgrades have been added to this Microbus, not just as a visual improvement but for improved useability. The original 1,192 cc air-cooled flat-four cylinder was replaced with a larger 1,991 cc engine that retains the original unit's charm and personality but with increased power to cope with modern traffic. A period-correct luggage rack has been added to the roof, along with period travel window stickers adding to the vintage appeal. Other features include two front operable safari windows, a 2/3 split center-row seat, a dash-mounted AM/FM Blaupunkt radio, and an electric clock. Today this 1958 "23-window" Microbus displays just two miles since the completion of its restoration at the time of cataloging and would be a welcome addition to any collection of automotive cultural icons.
