The Volvo Amazon was designed by Jan Wilsgaard and was introduced to the public on September 1, 1956, but deliveries did not start until March 1957. It was intended as a successor to the popular Volvo PV444, but proved too expensive. The PV444 had a reputation as a cheap "people's car" and was therefore replaced by an "intermediate model", the PV544. In October 1965, the "Favorit", a "stripped down version" of the Amazon, was released, which would eventually replace the PV544.
Volvo initially used the designation Amazon in the Swedish home market and wanted to call the export version Amazon. Originally the first model was designated with the model number P1200, later this became P120A.
Our Volvo Amazon 122S was delivered new on June 30, 1962 with the description “Sporty version”. Abbreviated S. The 122S emblem indicates that the car is equipped with an engine with two carburetors. We also find an emblem on the trunk that indicates that the car is equipped with the M41 4-speed gearbox with overdrive. Even the Police in Sweden chose the 122S version as their official car at the time. On October 1, 2003, the Volvo received a Dutch license plate and could then officially hit the road here. In the accompanying Multi folder we find many invoices from Sweden, also in the Netherlands the Volvo has been well taken care of by the Volvo Specialist in Monster, which is evident from the many invoices from 2013 to 2023, not only technically but also optically.
The deep dark gray bodywork in combination with the dark red interior is truly a beautiful combination. The restoration was neatly recorded on two CDs at the time. the chrome work is more than neat. The sheet metal fits nicely and the Volvo is fitted with the correct Vredestein tires in the correct sizes.
In short, a very nice Volvo 122S Amazon in fine driver's condition that will provide many kilometers of classic driving pleasure as only an Amazon can offer.
