The Volvo 780 coupe debuted at the International Auto Show in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1985, marking Volvo's return to the two-door coupe market following the departure of the 262C in 1981. The 780 became available in 1986 and was designed by Marc Deschamps and built by Carrozzeria Bertone in Turin, Italy. For the first two years that the 780 was available worldwide it received the B280F V6 engine and a solid rear axle. From August 1987 the 780 came equipped with Volvo's independent rear suspension, which used self-levelling Nivomat shocks to keep ride height correct. The B280F at this point produced roughly 150bhp but to address concerns about performance, Volvo introduced the B230FT+ with Volvo's Turbo+ boost controller, increasing the engine output to 175bhp. The following model year saw this increase to 188bhp.
This example of the rare 780 coupe is presented in newly machine polished burgundy coachwork and is believed to be one of just four in the UK. Imported to the UK in 2016 from Japan, the car is described as in good overall condition with excellent bodywork but for one small area of lacquer peel no bigger than a tennis ball. Recent work includes changing the oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs, HT leads, as well as cleaning the MAF and throttle body. The coolant has been flushed and changed and a new thermostat was fitted at the same time. The brakes have also had an overhaul recently, with a new master cylinder and fluid as has the automatic transmission. Knowledgeable Volvo enthusiast will know that the Nivomat self-levelling shocks will at some point need replacing and the best option is with Bilstein standard springs, which can be found for around £500 for the pair should the new owner wish. Inside the leather seats are good heated and electrically operated. A rare example of the C70's predecessor found in this auction and well presented; it is safe to say it's unlikely you will bump into another on these shores, so a unique opportunity.
