Designed by Veritas co-founder Ernst Loof in 1949, the Meteor was built for Formula 2 regulations and produced from 1951 to 1954. The model was powered by a Veritas-designed 2.0-litre engine.
Belgian racer François Vermeulen purchased chassis 502 on 8 May 1951, with a period document on file noting “502” as the chassis and engine number. Vermeulen would lend his new Meteor to friend and co-driver Arthur Legat.
Legat of Chimay, Belgium, then 53 years of age, was famous for his racing in the pre-war years, particularly his back-to-back victories in the 1931 and 1932 Grands Prix des Frontières.
Legat would enter this Meteor into five known races between 1951 to 1954, notably becoming the oldest driver to debut in Formula 1. He finished 13th in the 1952 Belgian Grand Prix. Fascinating newspaper extracts and photographs are available to view on file, along with a race chart. Legat purchased chassis 502 with engine 502 in September 1953 from Vermeulen and would retain this Veritas Meteor until his passing in February 1960.
Little is known of the succeeding ownership history, but in the early 1980s this Meteor was acquired by The Aumann Collection and subject to a nut-and-bolt restoration. The car was raced at the Nürburgring in 1987 and has been exhibited since. Today the car has been found to have an engine numbered with “502”.
This Veritas Meteor is a fantastic example. Complimented by its superb period race history and wonderful history file, it is eligible for various historic racing events.
