Description

The Griffith was the car that catapulted TVR into the big league of performance car manufacturers when it was unveiled as a concept at the 1990 British Motor Show in Birmingham. It was the beginning of a very successful period under guidance of the great Peter Wheeler. The Griffith looked stunning with its muscular lines and was thunderously fast. The interior was constructed around the driver with innovative and tactile design features - many of them machined from billet aluminium. Over 300 orders were taken at the show, and when the first cars were delivered to the press and public in 1992, the reception was even better; “shockingly loud, unapologetically politically incorrect but unapologetically great too”, said Autocar. Underpinned by a lightweight spaceframe chassis based on the one developed for the Tuscan race car series, the first run of cars used Rover V8s reworked to give either 240 bhp (4.0-litre) or 280 bhp (4.3-litre). Known as the ‘pre-cat’ cars, they are the rawest, and arguably the best sounding of the Griffiths, and are suitably rare and highly prized by collectors. With 420 Nm of torque on tap, the Griffith 430 could burble round town but also spin its rear tyres in a bellowing frenzy of tortured rubber if dropped into third, smashing 0 - 100 kph in just 4,6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 kph. The Griffith remained in production until 2002, with 2582 examples being sold in total.

The example we are offering for sale is a 1993 Griffith 430, delivered new in Germany so it's a proper LHD version. The car was ordered in the spectacular and typically TVR colour of Ocean Haze, which suits this nineties supercar incredibly well. The car was very well maintained during its stay in Germany, with all service invoices still present. In 2014, the Griff was sold to the second owner in Belgium, and was pampered as a little baby since. Underneath, it had all the necessary upgrades and replacements of the known rusty parts, and the engine was completely rebuild in 2017 by the British TVR specialist Powers Performance in Coventry at a mileage of 129.000 km. Further enhancements are the fitting of genuine TVR Tuscan seats in matching black leather, and gorgeous Team Dynamics alloys in 16" at the front and 17" at the rear. The original TVR 7-spoke Estoril wheels (15" front, 16" rear) are still with the car as well. The date of first registration is 8th of October 1993, which will give it a proper classic car status this year in most of the European countries.

This Griffith is very well documented with a huge file of invoices. Due to this continuous and extended service record it still feels like a new TVR. It handles beautifully and the powerful 4,3 litre V8 engine puts a smile on your face from the first second it bursts into life. As a LHD Griffith in such an excellent condition is becoming very rare, this is a unique opportunity for the discerned collector and sportscar enthusiast. There is not a similar specced car on the market and values are rising. So if you are lusting for too long now to obtain a wonderful Griffith, then this may be the one for you !
