Description
- The body has been designed by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, a prolific designer who also styled cars for Ferrari and Maserati.
- One of Triumph’s most popular sports cars
- Affordable, classic British motoring
- Faithfully maintained and carefully used
- Among the easiest of post-war classic sports cars to own and maintain, being supported by a multitude of component suppliers and other specialists
- Much more spacious and comfortable than the previous series
- With a very reasonable luggage capacity for a sports car
From 1952 onwards, Triumph launched a series of sports models: from the TR1 to the TR2 and TR3.
They were followed by the TR4, a completely new project, produced from 1961; this was then followed by the TR5 and the TR6.
The Triumph TR4 was introduced in 1961 to follow its very successful predecessors, the TR2 and TR3.
The body was given a more modern and updated appearance by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, a prolific designer who styled cars for Ferrari and Maserati, designing some of the latter’s most successful cars in the postwar era.
The TR4 shared the same basic chassis as the previous TR3, but benefited from a wider front and rear track as well as rack and pinion steering.
The TR4’s Hotchkiss drive system was replaced with an independent rear suspension, indicated by an “IRS” badge attached to the TR4A’s rear.
The transmission offered full synchromesh in all forward gears and engine output was also increased for the TR4, from 1,991cc to 2,138cc thanks to a larger bore.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This charming Triumph TR4 is a very well cared for example finished in Signal Red with a black interior.
In 1966 the car was exported to California. Since 1991 the Triumph is in Europe. The car was imported by a mister Schils from Belgium. He owned the car till 2019 when he sold the car to the former owner.
This owner decided to trade in the Triumph on a Aston Martin DB2/4 MKIII.
At an unknown date a restoration has been carried out and later the car has been maintained carefully.
The former owner is an enthusiastic rally driver and is technically very well educated. He maintains his cars himself and spend serious time and money in his cars.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
The paintwork of the Triumph is nice. Not freshly restored but nice with a nice deep shine.
Here and there one can see that the car is not a trailer queen but a carefully used car.
The chrome bumpers are in a nice condition with nice shiny chrome.
A little dent can be found on the left bump stop but this can easily be replaced.
The doorgaps are nice. All doorrubbers and window rubbers are in a nice/proper condition.
The original IRS badge is off-course on the boot of the car.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior of the Triumph is in a very nice condition. The seats don’t show any wearing.
The carpets are all in a fine order and period correct.
The wooden dashboard has been recently restored by the former owner and the result is very nice.
All gauges, knobs and meters have been checked and are all in perfect working order.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Triumphs are known for their raw and agile personality, providing the classic roadster feel.
With comforts and plenty of urge, Triumphs were the quintessential British sports car and continues to enjoy a massive following around the world.
The driving experience is a great combination of Triumph’s classic 4-pot engine, precise gear changes, communicative steering, and nimble handling.
This example is a nice looking and driving car for the enthusiast and collector and presents an opportunity to own with a relatively low price an ideal summer classic.
