Description
“Nutter was a champion Speedway racer back in the 60s. He builds a few Triumph hot rod Trackers that harken back to his championship racing days.” -Adam Lindemann
The legend of Slidin’ Sonny Nutter begins in 1958, when he was 13 years old and working as a “gunk brush” at Jack Baldwin’s motorcycle shop in Santa Monica, California, cleaning and detailing motorcycles. His interest soon became an insatiable passion, and he began racing flat track every Friday and Saturday night. In the 1970s, Sonny found his niche with tremendous success in the brakeless Speedway class.
Sonny became so successful that he was able to raise a family from the winnings resulting from racing five nights a week at Southern California circuits. He won the title of California Speedway Champion twice and was the captain of the USA’s Speedway team in the World Speedway Championships. Sonny still lives in Santa Monica, where he builds “Nutterized” trackers. These bikes are authentic throwbacks modeled after the oil-in-frame Triumphs that legends like Sonny raced in the 1970s.
This example is one of those bikes, and the build was finished by Nutter for Adam Lindemann in 2015, after the two were introduced via mutual friend and artist Billy Al Bengston. The bike features all the hallmarks of a 1970s flat track racer, including swept-back handlebars, a tracker-style seat, an era-evoking paint scheme, and the removal of the front fender. The Bonneville is also fitted with desirable additional upgrades, including Brembo disc brakes and an ARD magneto. This is a rare chance to own a thoughtfully built Triumph by one of the most famous names in California motorcycle racing.
