Rare in the market

The Japanese car maker Subaru, formerly Japan’s leading aircraft manufacturer under the name of Nakajima Aircraft, was inspired by the research work in its laboratories to design the first light car with stable handling after the Second World War.
In the early 1970s, Subaru was the first manufacturer to equip a mass-produced saloon with four-wheel drive, a feature which has now become characteristic of the make and is found in the Subaru Legacy.
In 1989, before the model even went on sale, three Legacys competed in the FIA’s 100,000 km (62,137 miles) world speed record in category A, reaching the finish line after 18 days at an average speed of 223 kph (138.6 mph) for the fastest of them. In 1990, the Legacy was the first car in category N to finish the Safari Rally, which it went on to dominate in this category for eight years running.
Due to the restricted import quotas, there were very few Japanese cars on the road in France before 1992, when the restrictions were relaxed so that French buyers could enjoy the Subaru Legacy Turbo 4WD. It was fitted with a 2-litre flat-four engine with four valves per cylinder.

The model we are offering for sale is a Legacy Turbo 4WD originally from Spain and first registered on 2 December 1992. It was recently purchased by its current owner, who has carried out a general overhaul of the car, including the replacement of the timing gear, turbocharger, water pump, spark plugs, fuel pump and brake pads. As he wanted to create a car which could compete in historic regularity rallies (VHRS), he also fitted a pair of bucket seats and four Koni Sport shock absorbers costing more than 800 €. The car comes moreover with its FFSA pass, authorising it to take part in VHRS events. From the outside, this Subaru with its gold wheels has the same livery as the Legacy RS which Colin McRae drove during the 1992 WRC season.
With its precise, dynamic handling, the car demonstrated its potential to the full during our road test on some fine twisty roads.
Subaru Legacy Turbos rarely come onto the market and this interesting example has all it needs to take part in the next regularity rally!
