Description
Capitalizing on the success of its race-proven Bearcat, Stutz supplemented its model lineup with the Bulldog, a narrow four-passenger sport touring equipped with a 10" longer wheelbase.
While owned by Clarence Kay of Sunnyvale, California, this Model G’s roadworthiness was demonstrated as the only participant from the West Coast in the 1954 Anglo-American Vintage Car Rally in England, organized by automotive historian Henry Austin Clark Jr. In a published article, Mrs. Kay describes giving a ride to then-Vice President Richard Nixon in the Stutz prior to its boarding a ship for England. Subsequent owners include collectors Tom and JoAnne Martindale, Dave Noran, and Bob Mosier. The current owner acquired this Bulldog in 2011, and completed an engine rebuild utilizing a new block with a slightly larger bore, yielding a displacement of 390 cubic inches and producing an estimated 100 hp. Additionally, high-speed gears matching the Bearcat’s 2.95:1 final ratio, for long-legged cruising, were installed. More than $100,000 in receipts document the mechanical work completed on this car, and it performed without issue in a recent multiday, 500-mile rally in Central California.
Its presentation today features red body paintwork complemented by black fenders, and correct, brown “Spanish leather” covers the seats. A powerful and proven veteran of rallies, this 1918 Stutz Bulldog serves as an ideal representation of Stutz’s performance abilities on any road.
