- Dans les grands noms de l’industrie automobile aux États-Unis figure à une place de choix un certain Raymond Loewy, français expatrié outre-Atlantique après la Première Guerre Mondiale. Après 70 ans de carrière, ce dessinateur industriel pourra se targuer d’avoir exécuté les logos Shell, BP, Lucky Strike, ou encore d’avoir été le père du mouvement Streamline…
- Sa pièce maîtresse restera une automobile : la Studebaker Avanti ! Réalisée en seulement 40 jours, son cahier des charges était simple : dessiner la voiture de sport idéale (rien que ça !). L’exemplaire présenté dans ces pages est un modèle R2 à compresseur et boîte de vitesses mécanique. Sa carrosserie en fibre de verre arbore une magnifique couleur bleu argent, marié à une sellerie en skaï rouge et crème.
- La voiture a circulé aux USA jusqu’en 2011, avant d’être importée en France en 2012. Son précédent propriétaire la conservera 10 ans, en veillant à utiliser régulièrement son auto, tout en lui offrant un entretien méticuleux et régulier. Ce sont les spécialistes de Pacific Garage, à Vernon, qui s’occuperont de cette auto, avec notamment une réfection complète du moteur en 2017, et la restauration de l’ensemble du système de freinage en 2021.
- Malgré une faible utilisation depuis son arrivée dans la collection du propriétaire actuel, notre essai a révélé une voiture très homogène, encore incroyablement puissante pour nos standards actuels. La combinaison moteur V8 à compresseur et boîte manuelle transforme l’Avanti en dragster. Une révision d’usage sera cependant à prévoir pour repartir l’esprit tranquille.
- Rarissime sur le marché français, cette voiture se démarque de toutes les autres, tant par sa ligne futuriste que par sa mécanique. Confortable, le modèle comblera de joie le connaisseur d’américaines, celui en quête d’une perle rare ou l’admirateur du plus grand designer du XXe siècle.

- His masterpiece will always be a car: the Studebaker Avanti! Completed in just 40 days, his brief was simple: to design the ideal sports car (no less!). The example presented in these pages is an R2 model with a compressor and mechanical gearbox. Its fibreglass bodywork is a magnificent silver-blue, with red and cream skai upholstery.
- The car ran in the USA until 2011, before being imported to France in 2012. Its previous owner kept the car for 10 years, making sure it was used regularly and receiving meticulous, regular maintenance. The specialists at Pacific Garage in Vernon will look after the car, including a complete overhaul of the engine in 2017 and restoration of the entire braking system in 2021.
- Despite little use since its arrival in the current owner's collection, our test drive revealed a very consistent car, still incredibly powerful by today's standards. The combination of supercharged V8 engine and manual gearbox transforms the Avanti into a dragster. However, you'll need to have the car serviced before you can set off again with peace of mind.
- A rarity on the French market, this car stands out from all the others, as much for its futuristic styling as for its powertrain. Comfortable, the model will delight the connoisseur of American cars, those in search of a rare gem or the admirer of the greatest designer of the twentieth century.
