Description

Chassis No. 5CXSA1819XL000091

Produced as car number 91 out of 249 total, this 1999 Shelby Series 1 Roadster is one of just six examples to be painted Black by Shelby, while the interior was specified with optional Black Italian leather. The Shelby Series 1 stands as the sole vehicle to be completely designed from the ground up by Carroll Shelby himself. Conceptualized as the successor to the iconic Shelby Cobra, development began circa 1994 with a focus on delivering exceptional performance. While 500 cars were expected to be built, production was halted after 249 cars were completed due to production delays and changing government regulations.

All the cars utilized an IndyCar derived aluminum Aurora V8 4.0-liter V8 engine mated to a ZF six-speed transaxle for better weight distribution. Building on its early acclaim, a supercharged variant soon followed, elevating horsepower up to 550. The supercharged cars also received a MagnaFlow stainless steel exhaust as standard. In total, it is estimated that approximately 60 cars were outfitted with the supercharged engine option, like chassis number 91 on offer. The drivetrain was paired with a carbon fiber body mated to a lightweight high strength aluminum box frame chassis weighing only 265 pounds, allowing for the total vehicle weight to only 2,650 pounds with a near-perfect 49/51 weight distribution. Ensuring sporting handling characteristics, the suspension utilized race derived dual wishbone suspension with inboard mounted coil-overs with remote reservoir dampers.

Car number 91 was received by its original owner and co-creator of Patrón Tequila, Martin Crowley, on 14 December 2000. From there, Crowley returned the car to Shelby, where it was upgraded with a supercharger in September 2002. As is commonly known, no Series 1 was equipped with a supercharger as initially delivered. Due to EPA regulations the cars had to return to Shelby at a later date for the factory fitted upgrade. As a result of this upgrade, it is thought that only one other black Series 1 was similarly equipped with the potent supercharger. Upon his passing in 2003, the car found a new owner, where it stayed until October 2009, when it was sold again. Since then, the car was sold one more time to the current owner in November 2019, according to the clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report. The current owner has shown the car, and it earned a first-place award at the Team Shelby Vegas Bash in the specialty class in 2019 and again where it won a coveted first in class in the Cobra class at the 2021 La Jolla Concours d'Elegance. Today, the car remains in splendid condition having benefitted from the mild Souther western climates of Nevada and California since new, and it is a rare opportunity to experience the only car ever to be designed entirely by Carroll Shelby, with its unique features and powerful performance.
