Built to go racing in the FIA Group 3 GT class, Carroll Shelby embarked on the 427 project to vastly enhance the already potent 289 Cobra. Wider chassis, coil springs, fuller body with pronounced fender bulges, larger brakes, massive fuel tank, Halibrand magnesium racing wheels, and a breathed on 500hp 427 cubic in V8 engine, all made for the muscular 427 Competition Cobra.
CSX 3011 has led an exhilarating life, and whose first mission was being a press car, and featured on the cover of Sports Car Graphic magazine. CSX 3011 would go on to be included in the Shelby Cobra Caravan publicity tour visiting cities throughout the USA to promote the brand’s racing success. Then Hollywood fame struck, and CSX 3011 was loaned to MGM Studios to be featured along with Elvis Presley in the movie Spinout.
Once its press duties were complete, CSX 3011 was sold new via Ford of Mexico to Formula One driver Moises Solana Arciniega, and raced both in Mexico and the USA. The 427 would go on to be sold to another Mexican race driver, Juan Carlos Bolanos, until a pit lane fire rendered the Cobra unfit for racing. In the 1980s CSX 3011 was purchased by a noted Cobra collector who would commission a complete restoration and rebody, and then owning the 427 until the early 1990s. In the later aughts, CSX 3011 would undergo another restoration with marque specialist Curt Vogt’s Cobra Automotive of Wallingford, Connecticut. This restoration was commissioned by the very same collector who owned CSX 3011 in the 1980s.
One of just 23 427 Competition Cobras built, CSX 3011 today shows just as it did in the 1960s when on the Shelby Cobra Caravan publicity tour, and comes to us out of a fantastic blue-chip multi-marque USA collection.
