At the heart of the conversion offered by John Cooper Garages was a new cylinder head that offered performance straight out of a race engine tuner’s handbook, developed in conjunction with Cooper’s old friend Jan Oder and Janspeed Engineering, boasting larger inlet and exhaust valves for greater fuel flow capability and new aluminium bronze vale seats that offered reliability and durability at a time when greener fuels were emerging.
John Cooper Garages claimed, at the time, that torque was increased from 42lb.ft to 64lb.ft and power output up from 41bhp to a healthy 60bhp, decreasing the car's 0-60 time by six seconds to 12.6 secs, not too shabby for a standard Mini over 30 years ago. At the time this was every boys dream which those of us who are of a certain age will surely remember.
