Description

"When the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was released to the public in October 1965, the development departments were showing the result of work carried out over a period of some ten years. The new series was characterised by surprisingly modern features and, with their development, Rolls-Royce broke new ground and away from many sacred design principles. The new models were technically striking in three ways; a monocoque chassis was used, all wheels were sprung independently and four-wheel disc brakes now ensured stopping power of the kind expected in a modern car. Under the bonnet, the V8 engine which had been introduced in the Silver Cloud series was employed. In February 1977 the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II was introduced. Outwardly the models were identifiable by bumpers with rubber inserts and edges made from polyurethane. The most notable changes mechanically were to the rack and pinion steering and modifications to the front suspension which markedly improved handling. The Silver Shadow Long Wheelbase was renamed the Silver Wraith in 1976 and a total of 2,135 examples were manufactured. In addition to the additional legroom, the Silver Wraith was identifiable by a smaller rear window, Everflex roof and different wheel covers.
Originally registered on 23rd August 1979 this Rolls-Royce has been a well-cared for example. Supplied with the original owner’s manuals and a well stamped service book showing works undertaken by various dealers including Dutton Forshaw, Wadham Stringer and supplying dealer Dyer. Recent work commissioned by the vendor and carried out by marque specialist Nigel Sandell includes a new radiator and hoses, new suspension parts fitted and the ride height adjusted correctly and a service. Prior to purchasing by the vendor the car benefitted from a new Everflex, brakes overhauled, as were the carburettors. The bodywork was extensively taken care of with major work carried out to the wheel arches, the paintwork was taken back to bare metal and resprayed accordingly. Photographic evidence of the work carried out is in the history folder. This Silver Wraith has also been fitted with an LPG conversion, although the tank has been removed from the boot and will require replacing to re-instate the system. Rolls-Royce Silver Wraiths are rarer than their Silver Shadow counterpart and are considered to be more useable due to the additional legroom. This example comes with a V5 registration document together with a current MoT test certificate valid until 26th July 2024 even though it is MoT and road tax exempt. Consigned by Stewart Banks.
