Description

Chassis No. 9140430259

Engine No. 6230036

Amidst its tremendously successful 908 and 917 sports prototype programs, Porsche found time not only to continue development of the GT class 911 but also develop a factory competition variants of the mid-engined 914 . The resulting car, the 914-6 GT, proved to the sporting world that, in the right hands, the lightweight and balanced 914 was more than capable of competing with higher-horsepower sports cars. This was never better illustrated than during the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, which saw the 914-6 GT finish first in the 2.0-liter GT class and sixth overall – cementing its credentials as a world-class road racer.

This particular 914-6 boasts an important period SCCA racing history. A very early example of the model, chassis 0259 is understood to have been purchased new by William "Bill" Stroh of Northbrook, Illinois and converted to SCCA C-Production class specifications shortly thereafter, featuring a distinctive Richie Ginther-style low windscreen and a roll hoop. Stroh campaigned the car in SCCA's Midwest Division during the 1970 and 1971 seasons with official support from the VW North Central Division of Porsche+Audi, claiming victory on several occasions and a top-ten finish in the 1970 American Road Race of Champions at Road Atlanta. After Stroh's retirement from SCCA racing, the 914-6 would ultimately pass into the ownership of another Illinois-based caretaker. Approximately 15 years ago, the 914-6 was treated to a bare-metal restoration performed by one of the original team mechanics during the 1970 and 1971 seasons to return the car to its as-raced SCCA specification and livery.

Since restoration, this historic 914-6 race car has been used sparingly having been displayed at Luftgekuhlt and chosen to compete on track and for the concours at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion. Offered with period photographs and race results, this well-restored 1970 Porsche 914-6 is a window in time back to a golden era in SCCA sports car racing, and today represents an enticing opportunity to participate in any number of historic Porsche motorsport events behind the wheel of pedigreed SCCA C-Production race car.
