Upon making its debut in 2001, the Porsche 911 GT2 was the fastest, most ferocious road-legal variant of the type-996 911. Its twin-turbo 3.6-litre engine boasted 462 horsepower, 10 per cent more power than the contemporary 911 Turbo, thanks to a higher boost limit, a larger intercooler, and a less-restrictive exhaust. The GT2 also featured rear-wheel drive, versus the 911 Turbo’s all-wheel drive, making it a better driver’s car to some. Honed for the circuit, the GT2 also eschewed the Turbo’s retractable sunroof, one of its front radiators and automatic climate-control system reduced weight by around 100 kilograms. Both lighter and more powerful, the GT2 eclipsed the already dazzling 911 Turbo in terms of performance.
The exterior featured the 911 Turbo’s bodywork but with a revised nose and larger rear wing for improved aerodynamics. Inside, the GT2 was a true two-seater, with the 911’s traditional rear demi-seats being replaced with carpeting. For convenience, the GT2 retained air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, electric seat adjustment, and a simpler entertainment system. Porsche’s phenomenal carbon-ceramic brake package was standard. GT2s came with an uprated G96 six-speed manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential, and racing-derived suspension upgrades. The alloy “Turbo twist” wheels measured 8.5 inches by 18 inches in front and a much wider 12 inches by 18 inches at the rear. Only 1,287 examples of the type-996 911 GT2 are believed to have been produced.
The example offered here is believed to be one of only 247 made during the first production year. It completed production on 6 June 2001 and was delivered new to Porsche Hoogenboom in Rotterdam, Netherlands. On 4 September 2001, Elite Garage of Zuzwil, Switzerland would acquire the GT2. A copy of the sales invoice indicates the mileage to have been 220 kilometres at this point. The car would not change hands again until 2015, when The Carrera Collection acquired it from Elite Garage.
This 911 GT2 wears its factory-correct finish of Black over a black interior. It was outfitted from the factory with the Clubsport Package, which added a roll cage, multi-point harnesses--which remain with the vehicle but uninstalled—and a fire extinguisher for participation in sanctioned motor sports. Other factory options included a CDR-22 Becker AM/FM radio with CD player, and aluminium-look instrument faces.
With only 601 kilometres indicated on the odometer at the time of cataloguing and retaining its matching-numbers engine, this 911 GT2 has clearly been pampered its entire life. Given its well-preserved condition, relative rarity, and inherent desirability among Porsche enthusiasts, it is surely one of the most compelling type-996 models to come to market of late.
