Bring A Trailer auction preview: Three-Owner Lifelong California Slant Nose Cabriolet. One of 75 M505 5-Speed Cabriolets Built. Original Paint, Books, Tools, and Records.1989 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet Slant NoseVIN WP0EB0932KS070524Guards Red with Cashmere Beige Leather InteriorSince the introduction of the Porsche 930 Turbo, ‘Flachbau’ version also known as the 930S and the ‘Slant Nose’, has become an icon of 1980s performance cars. Incorporating the more aerodynamically efficient smooth front fenders of the Le Mans-winning 935, the slant nose was a modern and visually stunning take on the traditional 911 package which helped transition the aging 911 platform to one of the most sought-after sports cars of the 911 lineage.Like many Porsche design elements, the slant nose was derived from the functional demands of racing. To reduce drag on the taller headlight and front fender profile, engineers removed the headlight pods and replaced them with flat front fenders. This purposeful look captured the hearts and minds of enthusiasts, and as early as 1981, factory slant nose road cars were being quietly constructed in small numbers for important customers through the Sonderwunsch (‘special wish’) program. During the same period, a proliferation of aftermarket fiberglass slant nose conversions arrived, which varied in quality and detail, but demonstrated significant market demand for the slant nose design. For the 1987 model year, Porsche offered the slant nose as a factory option. Designated as Porsche code M505, the slant nose option cost an eye watering $29,555 in 1989 (on top of the $85,000 price tag for the 930 Cabriolet). M505 included revised front fenders with pop up headlights, boxed rocker extensions, and large vents let into the rear fenders aiding cooling for the auxiliary oil cooler on the right side. In 1989, the 930’s last model year, Porsche updated the series with the vastly improved G50 transmission (the first time a 5-speed gearbox was offered in the 930), making the 1989 slant nose both rare and desirably equipped from the factory. Just 75 M505 930 Cabriolets were built in 1989, representing what was the most expensive 911 a customer could buy. This particular Slant Nose Cabriolet is a three-owner example originally sold new on May 10, 1989 by Berkey Imported Cars, Inc. in Pleasanton, California. The Certificate of Authenticity indicates genuine factory built M505 was completed 3 March 1989, fitted with the following options:California EmissionsSteering Wheel w/Raised HubTonneau CoverHeated Seat – LeftLimited Slip DifferentialShorter Gear Shift LeverAmplifier SystemSlant NoseCD-2 CD Player w/RadioLuggage Compartment Black VelourBridgestone TiresThe Porsche dealership pre-delivery inspection was performed with 27 miles on the odometer on the 10th of May 1989 and the car was delivered to a resident of Oakland, California. Berkey Imported Cars continued to service the car early in its life, performing additional maintenance in June of 1990 at 2,508 miles and in March of 1991 with 4,336 miles. Service was performed later by Michael Stead Porsche in Walnut Creek, California in 1997 and 1999 with 16,021 and 24,330 miles. The first owner consigned the car for sale to Prestige Autohaus, Walnut Creek, CA, where it was sold to the second owner in March of 2005. At that time, the car had covered 42,482 miles. Subsequent records under second ownership document the modest 3,000 miles covered, confirmed by copies of service invoices and a current Carfax. Services under second ownership included regular oil and fluid changes, brake servicing at 44,090 miles, smog tests as needed for up-to-date California registration, and a new battery in 2014. The current and third owner purchased the car in 2018 from Fantasy Junction and has serviced it regularly adding minimal miles over the past six years of ownership. Services under current ownership in 2018 with 45,560 miles indicated include a pre-purchase inspection, a new wastegate actuator, new fuel injector, and a new distributor cap and rotor. In 2019 with 45,694 miles indicated, Porsche Austin serviced the car including new hood struts, a new fuel accumulator, new windshield washer pump and valve, and a bulb replacement. In October 2024, the car was serviced at Porsche specialists Eason Auto with 45,766 miles including a new steering column bushing, new shift tower bushings, and removal of the original speedometer. The current owner reports that the miles indicated are consistent and documented until about 30 miles ago when the owner was driving and pushed the trip reset button. Typical of Porsche speedometers of this era, the aging plastic mileage gear teeth fractured, becoming inoperable. The owner drove the car back to his garage and Palo Alto Speedo repaired the odometer, retaining the numeric reading as indicated today. The owner reports the car has been driven fewer than 30 miles during the period when the odometer was inoperable. A letter signed by the owner confirming this information is included with the car. Today, this remarkably original Porsche is in very nice condition with excellent original Guards Red paint applied over exceptionally nice original factory body panels. Showing only minor paint imperfections and minor road chips on the hood, the finish is very satisfying particularly considering the originality of the car. The metal body panels have been metered with a digital paint meter returning numbers below 6 mils on all metal panels including the hood and front fenders all three of which retain the matching Porsche factory VIN stickers. The bumpers, black rubber and trim are also in excellent condition throughout the car. The stance is factory correct featuring desirable 7- and 9-inch Fuchs wheels, with color matched centers. The glass, lenses, and lights are also in excellent condition with a small chip noted in the windshield, unchanged over the past 20 years. The power convertible top is in very nice shape with only minor evidence of use. The electric mechanism works properly, and the rear window remains supple and clear.Normally found with black interior, this car is factory optioned with Cashmere leather and the Porsche factory option beltline leather package, which includes leather for the lower dash, leather HVAC control box, leather door pulls, and leather door pocket lids. The dashboard and instrumentation are in excellent condition and the original Porsche-branded CD player is still in place. The overall condition of the materials and surfaces is excellent, including the seats, carpets, and dash pad. The dashboard, switches, iconic black-dial instruments with orange needles, and analog controls are excellent and correct, once again showing virtually no evidence of excessive use or long-term sun exposure. The leather seats show minimal use, with only minor driver’s side bolster wear evident. The rear seating area appears essentially unused and free of wear, with smoothly hinging rear seatbacks, showing excellent finishes both front and back. The original carpets are in very good condition, with light use in typical places, in keeping with the low miles indicated. The engine compartment is mercifully unmodified, a welcome treatment for a 930 Turbo given that so many examples have been altered over the years. The original engine and engine compartment are clean and attractive, offering a very nice presentation consistent with an unmodified example that has been driven minimal miles and properly cared for. The front storage compartment is stock in appearance, lined with the optional black velour, housing factory correct spare tire, air compressor, and proper materials and finishes indicative of an original factory-preserved Porsche of this vintage. Underneath the car is remarkably well-preserved, there is only mild evidence of road use and no indication of structural damage or compromise to the floor or other components. The car starts easily, settles into a smooth idle, and pulls authoritatively on boost. One of the most defining aspects of the air-cooled Porsche experience is the G50 gearbox. While 4-speed 930s suffer from the widely spaced gears, the G50 transforms the car. Ratios are closer together offering modern shift action and synchromesh that greatly enhances the driving experience. The chassis, steering, and suspension are tight, while the 917-derived brakes respond very nicely even under higher demand coming down from highway speeds. This slant nose comes with the original owner’s manual, service records, an original sales brochure, detailed owners notes and mileage records from 2005, service records from 2005 onward, a set of floor mats, spare keys, tools, tool roll, air compressor and Certificate of Authenticity confirming this is a factory slant nose cabriolet delivered with all options featured on this exceptionally original car. Included among the books is the original maintenance booklet which supports the early service history along with the original Porsche options sticker. This is an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a preserved original low-mileage, unmodified factory Porsche 930 “Slant Nose” Cabriolet, delivered new in the quintessential 1980s color combination. 930s of all types have appreciated markedly, with rare variants becoming especially collectible. One of only 75 5-speed Slant Nose Cabriolets built, this 930 is both rare and beautiful, ensuring ongoing desirability as the Porsche market continues to attract enthusiasts seeking the very best examples of these iconic sports cars.
