If Porsche was going to capitalise on the late-noughties explosion in demand for all things ‘retro’, it was going to do it in its own distinctly stylish fashion. Limited to a mere 250 examples worldwide, the resulting 997-generation 911 Sport Classic was a gloriously nostalgic yet wonderfully understated special edition destined for ‘modern-classic’ status from the moment it was announced. It was also a fitting swansong for the revered 997-generation 911.

The basic package was as follows: an individually numbered Carrera 2S fitted with the factory ‘PowerKit’, equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes, clothed in the wider Carrera C4S bodywork and injected with a raft aesthetic nods to the 911s of yesteryear.

Most obviously these were the double-bubble roof, 2.7 RS-inspired ducktail spoiler, split-piece Fuchs wheels and twin polished exhausts. The interior was festooned with chocolate-coloured leather. And it was everywhere, from the door handles and tiny coat hooks to the central air vents. That’s right: each individual vein on the vents was upholstered with sumptuous brown leather. It beggars belief.

As its interior dash plaque indicates, this 997.2-generation 911 Sport Classic is number 041 of the mere 250 examples produced by Porsche. It was delivered new to Cologne in 2010 and subsequently owned by the CEO of a Frankfurt-based company.

This 911 Sport Classic was acquired by its third and most recent owner in early 2012, joining a remarkable German collection of Porsches spanning the marque’s entire history.

In the years since, it has been enjoyed sporadically (only around 8,000km have been added to the odometer, which today reads 25,200km) and diligently maintained – exclusively by the Porsche Centre Frankfurt. Most recently, in May of 2023, a major service was carried out, during which four new tyres were fitted and the gearbox oil was replaced.

Today, this 911 generally presents beautifully, with only minor gravel rash to the most exposed sections of paintwork and slight creasing to the driver’s seat bolsters. It retains its tool kit, tyre compressor, medical kit, leather documents pouch complete with all its factory manuals (including the stamped service book) and official Porsche correspondence and invoices.

Suffice to say, this is a well-cared for and accordingly well-presented example of Porsche’s exceedingly rare 997.2-generation Sport Classic special edition. The car is currently located in Monaco, registered in Germany and European taxes paid.
