Description
1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Coupe
VIN WP0AA2991WS321038
Black with Black Leather Interior
An instant classic, the 993 iteration of the venerable Porsche 911 continues to be highly sought-after decades after introduction. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 is the most developed and refined of the 1963 original that spawned more than half a century of sports car excellence. The layout of the instruments, the door profile, and the entire greenhouse remain fundamentally unchanged from the original 911, delivering a feeling of solidity and craftsmanship that still remains impressive nearly twenty-five years later.
A marvel of engineering and design, the 993 offers sophisticated multilink rear suspension and massive rear tires, delightfully coupled to the torquey but very livable twin plug 3.6 liter flat-6 cylinder engine. The brakes, always a Porsche strong suit, are superb, while Porsche’s robust 6-speed G50 gearbox offers amazing balance and response. Sophisticated and high performance even when compared against modern cars, the 993 captures the classic essence of the original 911, offering the best of both worlds – a true classic that can be driven and enjoyed daily while delivering the finest in Porsche performance.
The 993 was available in a variety of forms, with naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines, rear and four wheel drive, wide and narrow bodies, and in open and closed body designs. One of the most desirable of all the variants is the Carrera 4S. Combining the clean profile and naturally-aspirated 3.6 liter twin-plug flat six of the Carrera 4, the 4S features widened flares, wider wheels, Carrera suspension, and the famous “big red” brakes of the Twin Turbo. The combined performance features and unique design of the 4S truly creates a unique and exciting performance sports car.
According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this particularly stunning example was completed November 11, 1997. The car was optioned with the following equipment:
Supple Leather front and rear
Aluminum/Chrome Package
Power Seat Package
Stereo w/CD Player
Motor Sound Package
Rear Window Wiper
Wheel Caps with Colored Crest
US Standard Emissions
Pirelli Tires
Shortly after assembly, the car was sold to the first owner by Carrera Motors, Portland, Oregon, December 27, 1997. The service book accompanying the car indicates pre-sale inspection at 24 miles with the next service at 4,752 miles August 19, 1998. During this service, the speedometer was replaced under warranty. Service continued in September 2003 with 7,968 miles recorded in the service book. In 2003, the second and current owner purchased the car. For the past 20 years this Carrera 4S has remained in California, while being serviced as needed. Recent records include annual recommended factory maintenance performed at Michael Stead Porsche, Walnut Creek, California.
Today, this exceptional Porsche presents beautifully with excellent factory applied black paint that is glossy throughout and properly detailed. A small scratch on the front fender has been professionally corrected showing excellent blending. This former flaw is nearly undetectable even on close inspection. The body is in excellent condition throughout showing superb factory fit to the doors, trunk, and hood. The fit along the front and rear bumper caps is excellent showing no warpage or deflection to the factory contours. The various trim, lenses, and original factory glass are all exemplary in condition, beguiling the 22 years of age. The Porsche alloy wheels are in very fine condition with no curb rash and beautiful silver finish contrasting the stunning black finish and bright red big brake calipers. The overall presence is all the more dramatic, blending the iconic 911 profile against the tinted glass, delivering a hint of sinister beauty. This distinct and quintessential Porsche has perfect hunkered down stance, combining elegance and performance, particularly due to the striking stealthy black finishes.
The original interior is impeccable, offering clean and supple leather seats showing almost no wear to the leather surfacing. The door panels, including door pulls and door pocket lids are all in very nice condition, fitting tightly and delivering snappy returns when closed. The center console features the original combination CD/radio and of course, the 6-speed gearshift; a legendary hallmark of Porsche performance cars scarcely seen in modern offerings. Switches and various knobs are properly responsive to the touch while the detailed nomenclature and controls are in essentially new condition. The carpeting is clean and unmarked, protected by an additional set of floor mats, which show mild use evident in the driver’s footwell. The dashboard, gorgeous instruments, and center console remain in exceptional condition. All interior features, instruments, and A/C operate as expected. The headliner and sun visors are all uniformly preserved and free of notable blemishes. The overall fit and finish of the interior is tidy, cohesive, and exceptionally well-preserved.
The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and, in keeping with the rest of the car, are in excellent condition. The original engine has been properly serviced and maintained showing all factory correct stickers and appropriate engine bay detailing. The alloy castings, rubber hoses, and black composite components are all in remarkably fine condition. The trunk area is complete and tidy including the correct collapsible spare tire, proper black molded components, factory treated metal parts, and correct hardware. A complete set of tools and jacking accessories are properly stowed in the correct location. Inspection of the chassis confirms this low mile West Coast Carrera has been properly cared for, revealing clean and tight authentic chassis components, and no evidence of structural compromise to the floor or suspension support structures.
The car starts instantly and settles into a confident idle. The seats are comfortable and the controls are naturally within reach. The clutch and gearbox work in perfect harmony, owing in part to the minimal miles driven since new. The ventilated disc brakes are easily modulated even under a firm pedal, offering smooth and even braking, with great traction. The motor provides a wonderful induction hum even under mild acceleration, which opens up to a sonorous roar when accelerating to highway speeds. The performance is genuinely remarkable even by modern standards, offering exceptional handling, delightful ease of use, and that undeniably responsive 911 character, always delivering, always bringing a smile to anyone aboard.
The car comes with selected service records, a complete set of factory books including the owner’s manual and factory pouch, tool roll with tools, and factory jack. Please note that the actual mileage on this car totals 15,876, which represents 4,752 miles accumulated before the warranty speedometer replacement, plus the current 11,124 miles currently showing on the odometer.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an exceptionally well-preserved two-owner West Coast car featuring superlative cosmetic finishes and known history. Undeniably one of Porsche’s most desirable cars from the last three decades, this Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Coupe, finished in stunning black on black, is ready for enjoyable driving and ongoing enthusiastic appreciation as the last of the great air-cooled performance marvels of the 20th century.
