THIS CAR
Following two successive championship-winning seasons in the Can-Am racing series in the early 1970s, Porsche applied its newfound mastery of forced induction to the 911. The 930 Turbo of 1975 possessed enormous performance potential for its time, and each generation of the 911 since has included a Turbo in its lineup, becoming ever faster, refined, and capable.
The Porsche 993, produced from 1994 to 1998, was the company’s last air-cooled 911. Still very much part of the classic 911 lineage in terms of styling, it was adorned with contemporary design motifs and was considered revolutionary from its predecessors in terms of performance, comfort, and safety. In 1995, a 993 Turbo arrived with a twin-turbocharged engine displacing 3.6 liters, electronic engine management, redesigned cylinder heads, and a six-speed transaxle incorporating all-wheel drive. A fixed rear spoiler provided improved downforce and space for the two intercoolers. The world’s fastest production car at the time in terms of both acceleration and deceleration, 0–60 mph took a reported 3.9 seconds, with stopping from 60 mph in 2.3 seconds.
For 1997, the company’s Exclusive Department upped the ante with the Turbo S. Fitted with almost every available option as standard, the model was distinguished from the regular Turbo with Aerokit II front and rear spoilers, a pair of side-mounted air ducts, additional air inlets near the headlights, and yellow brake calipers, among other changes. Engine improvements yielded 424 hp – 25 hp more than the standard Turbo.
This Turbo S was sold new by Reeves Porsche of Tampa, Florida, to a private owner who kept it in his collection until 2015. The car shows extremely minimal signs of use and is still in its original combination of Black over a Cashmere leather interior, contrasted by generous amounts of carbon fiber on the dashboard, doors, steering wheel, gearshift, and hand brake. Additionally, leather trim covers most other surfaces in the cabin, including the air vents and window switches.
This Turbo S has been driven only 9,372 miles at the time of cataloguing. Service records since new and a CARFAX report reflect careful and meticulous usage. The 993 is also accompanied by its original owner’s manuals, tool kit, tire compressor, and spare tire, all of which are reported by the consignor to be in as-new condition.
Only 183 examples of the Turbo S were produced for the US, making it one of the rarest models of the cherished 993 platforms, and one that doesn’t come up for sale often. This particular example, boasting long-term ownership, low mileage, and a well-documented history with regular servicing, must surely be one of the best.
