Description
Emerging from the 1980s as one of the fastest cars on sale and the poster on every kid’s wall, Porsche’s 930 created a legend. When Porsche debuted their 964 Turbo in March 1990, it was the first comprehensive redesign of the turbocharged 911 since its debut in 1975. While powered by a more refined version of the 930’s 3.3-liter flat-six engine, the 964 Turbo fell short in the eyes of some, merely maintaining the famous performance of the 930 while smoothing out the car’s explosive power delivery.
Thankfully, Porsche enthusiasts did not have to wait long for a real upgrade: the 964 Turbo 3.6. In January 1993, Porsche unveiled a new 3.6-liter engine for the 964 Turbo, based on the M64 engine found in the 964 Carrera. To improve peak power and off-boost driveability, Porsche set to work revising the fuel injection system, adding new camshafts and a modern KKK Turbocharger to the 3.6. Power increased to 360 hp and torque rose 52 lbs./ft. over the previous model. The 3.6 Turbo is also the first Porsche to feature red painted Brembo brake calipers and 18" multipiece Speedline wheels, which have both become iconic parts in Porsche lore.
The 964 Turbo 3.6 was built only for 1993 and 1994 model years with Porsche producing just 1,436 units worldwide. The Turbo 3.6 is now highly sought after and represents the end of the rear-wheel-drive era for the 911 Turbo.
This Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 is an original US-delivery car, completed on May 13, 1993. The exterior was specified in a subtle shade of Midnight Metallic Blue juxtaposing the two-tone interior outfitted in Classic Gray supple leather, offset by deviating red carpets, seat piping, and contrast stitching. For a more pleasant driving experience, this car features desirable options like air-conditioning, an electric sunroof, front seat lumbar supports, and a rear seat cover.
Originally delivered to Virginia, this car has been carefully maintained from new, with only four private owners to date. In February 2015, the car was the recipient of a 30,000-mile service at marque expert Porsche of The Main Line, in Pennsylvania. This work also included a multi-point service, rebuilding the limited-slip differential, a new alternator, four-wheel alignment, and an air-conditioning refresh. This 964 Turbo is offered with its owner’s manual, warranty book, Certificate of Authenticity, tool kit, spare, jack, and lug wrench.
Beautifully made and well maintained, this 964 Turbo 3.6 represents a fantastic opportunity to add the final iteration of Porsche’s 20-year development cycle on the original 911 Turbo to your collection.
