Description
- A rare, original Super 90 Roadster
- Numbers-matching example finished in its original colors
- Very correct and properly detailed throughout
- Complete with tools, mechanical invoices, and a Kartex
- One of the most desirable 356 Roadsters extant
As original specifications go, this 356 Roadster is certainly among the very best. With its original ivory exterior with red vinyl upholstery, this Porsche boasts the highest performance engine available in a Roadster, the desirable Super 90. It’s thought that just some 5% of all Roadsters featured the S90 engine.
Ordered new by Robert D. Engel of San Mateo, California, through Georg Rittersbacher Sportwagen in Kaiserslautern, Germany, the 356 was specified with reclining seats, an ashtray, cigarette lighter, antenna and two loudspeakers, UKW windshield wipers, an additional sun visor with a make up mirror, and fittings for a head rest. In all likelihood, the car also received the currently fitted radio from new.
The factory Kartex further documents service work performed by Rittersbacher into 1962, indicating that perhaps Mr. Engel was stationed abroad during his first year of ownership of the car.
This numbers-matching car benefits from an older, but arguably high-end restoration during its prior, long term ownership. Purportedly a California car for most of its life, the Roadster offers many clues supporting that it has always been a very sound, correct and well cared for example.
The Roadster was desirably upgraded with a twin-grille rear engine lid, though a correct unit accompanies its sale. The Porsche also has a toolkit, Kartex and invoices for mechanical work conducted in both current and prior ownership. Furthermore, a recent compression test is on hand for review, and shows strong, even compression.
Also outfitted with the rare rear seat cushion, this S90 Roadster is one of very few which remains today as a matching-numbers example. Presented in its sharp and original color scheme, one would be hard pressed to find a better 356 Roadster on the market today.
