Description

Chassis No. 3560009

Engine No. 400029

Representing Pierce-Arrow's top-of-the-line model when new in 1934, this Model 1248A Twelve Brunn Metropolitan Town Car is powered by the impressive 462 cu-in V12 on the 144 inch wheel-base chassis, the longest available. Based upon previous research, this Pierce-Arrow is believed to have been custom-built for opera diva Ms. Mary Garden when new. With her father's role as the world's largest Pierce-Arrow dealer, the car is thought to be the only example to have received this striking Brunn design number 2353 Metropolitan Town Car coachwork. Designed to have a separate driver's compartment from the rear passengers, this town car design harkens back to horse-drawn carriages where the driver would sit exposed to the elements on hard-wearing materials like leather. In contrast, the passengers were protected in softer, luxurious accommodations in the rear. This design philosophy is reflected in this car, with the roof above the driver's compartment able to be removed when the weather permits.

This one-off Pierce-Arrow was fully restored to AACA concours standards under its current ownership in the mid-1990s. The Brunn aluminum body was refinished in a stunning deep black with matching painted steel artillery wheels hand striped in grey. Powered by the mighty 462 cu-in V12 with free-wheel capabilities, the engine compartment, other mechanical components, and undercarriage have been completely restored to a high standard. A set of mounted spares are found on each front fender with painted metal tire covers and locking hubcaps. The driver's compartment has been meticulously restored with black leather upholstery and a precious wood-trimmed dashboard holding a Pierce-Arrow clock. The fold-out windshield allows for additional ventilation. The rear compartment has been finished in beige cloth, with fold-away jump seats allowing up to seven passengers. With privacy in mind, every window in the rear passenger compartment has a silk pull-down shade, including the uncommonly seen roll-down rear quarter windows. Uniquely, the car has locks nearly everywhere, and they can be equipped on the front of the glove boxes, engine compartment, hubcaps, and every door.

Once the ground up restoration was completed, the car was shown with the AACA, winning both a First National Junior and Senior Award in 1994. It was additionally shown at the 1994 Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance. Today, the car remains in excellent condition, thanks to restricted use and indoor storage with bright chrome work, excellent panel fitment, and beautiful pinstriping. Covering just 797 miles since its restoration, this 1934 Pierce-Arrow remains a charming and rarely seen example worthy of continued preservation.
