Description

After the 1929 stock market crash, the American automotive industry was in crisis, but Packard weathered the storm and, amazingly, even turned a profit in 1930. It helped that the 7th series Packards for 1930 were sleeker, technically improved, and truly in a class of their own.

This attractive 740 Club Sedan was purchased in 1978 by noted collectors Matt and Barbara Browning, both of great American families. Mr. Browning’s grandfather created the Browning Arms Company, which revolutionized the firearms industry, and Barbara Browning’s grandfather was Mr. E.O. Wattis, a founding partner of the Utah Construction Company, which built the Hoover Dam. Together, the Brownings assembled an incredible collection of Brass and Classic Era cars, with a particular focus on Packards. The Packard remained in the Browning collection until their estate was sold in 2000 by Christie’s. The consignor, a prominent collector of the world’s most significant automobiles, purchased the car then, and it has since remained in his world-class collection. The cloth interior appears to be well preserved and largely original, featuring a Jaeger eight-day clock, heater, and adjustable driver’s seat. Exterior options include a Sparton horn, C.M. Hall headlamps and taillamp, and Packard trunk. A high-speed rear end was also installed, along with a period fan on the driver’s side windshield pillar, making this an excellent candidate for touring. Its great provenance and rare Club Sedan body style make this Packard an appealing choice for a connoisseur of Classic Era automobiles.

*Please note that this vehicle is titled by its Packard Vehicle Number, which is 187198.
