Few engineers made such an impression on the world of motorsport as the brothers Maserati, and the 1600 GT berlinetta was their final creation. Featuring a tubular chassis with independent front and rear suspension and powered by Aurelio Lampredi’s lauded four-cylinder twin-cam engine, the sports-racer punched well above its weight on both road and track. Of the 128 cars built between 1960 and 1963, 98 were bodied by Zagato and featured lightweight alloy coachwork with the ’s signature “double-bubble” roof.
Chassis 0094 was one of several examples used in competition and desirably finished with covered headlights. Sold to its first owner—Alberto Luti—in 1963, the Italian campaigned the diminutive GT with great success. A class win at that year’s Coppa Belvedere Hillclimb followed a 2nd in class finish at Ascoli-Colle San Marco and 3rd in class at Pontedecimo-Giovi.
The OSCA then passed through the hands of several owners both at home and abroad before returning to Italy in 1988. It was bought by famed historian Maurizio Tabucchi in 1991 and was restored while in his care before being registered for the road in 1997. The 1600 GT was sold at auction in March 1999 and, following stints in the US and UK, was registered in France by the consigning seller in August 2012.
Chassis 0094 is a magnificent specimen of the Maserati brothers’ last great project. Attractively finished in silver over red and powered by a potent 1.6-litre twin-cam “four”, this jewel of a is the embodiment of exclusivity, pedigree, and performance.
