Unveiled in 2019, the GT-R50 is the product of the intersection of two significant anniversaries: 50 years of both the Nissan GT-R and Italdesign. To celebrate, the famed Italian design house brought to life a spectacular concept based on one of the most lauded Japanese supercars of recent years: the R35-generation GT-R. Just 50 of these special sportscars were slated for production; however, thanks in part to the global pandemic and an eye-watering base price tag of €990,000, just 18 production examples were produced according to the manufacturer.
The ultra-exclusive coach-built machine benefitted from a roofline lowered by 54 millimetres, an enlarged power bulge on the bonnet and thinner, more aggressively styled LED headlamps. The rear of the car was reworked to great effect, with the production model’s signature round taillamps seemingly suspended in mid-air and a plunging rear window adding to the drama.
Far from just a styling exercise, beneath the bespoke bodywork lay a raft of mechanical improvements, most notably to the car’s hand-assembled 3.8-litre V-6 engine. New fuel injectors, uprated pistons and a redesigned exhaust system—not to mention a brace of larger GT3-specification turbochargers and intercoolers—contributed to a total power output of 710 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. Power was transferred to the rear wheels via an uprated six-speed dual clutch paddle-shift gearbox, differentials, and driveshafts. The impressive specification extended to Bilstein DampTronic adjustable dampers, custom 19-inch alloy wheels, and six- and four-piston Brembo brake callipers at the front and rear, respectively.
The ultra-exclusive example offered is the 11th of just 18 GT-R50 production cars built. Specified in optional Liquid Silver Metallic with Nismo Red accents, the car further benefits from an optional hydraulic rear wing, bringing the total list price to €1,050,000. Since being produced in 2021, the GT-R50 has remained in climate-controlled storage at the factory and then a state-of-the-art storage facility. Having never been delivered to a retail customer, the car is in absolutely brand-new showroom condition; at the time of cataloguing, its odometer read just 119 miles, as delivered from the factory.
An order of magnitude more special than the model on which it was based—and not just for its exclusivity—the spectacular GT-R50 is an incredible fusion of cutting-edge Japanese technology and forward-thinking Italian design. It was, in the words of Top Gear’s Tom Ford, “a mix of jaw-dropping looks and synapse-shattering performance … a fitting celebration of a half-century of brilliance from both companies”.
This marks a special opportunity to acquire the first of its kind to be offered at public auction. A true modern-day collectible that will be difficult to ever duplicate, this magnificent boutique supercar is the ultimate expression of the “Godzilla” dynasty.
