Description

Chassis No. YG2S42475

Engine No. 9FXEY55784

Conceived by the visionary Alec Issigonis, the compact Mini broke norms with its transverse engine, front-wheel drive, and Hydrolastic suspension bestowing the diminutive British icon with legendary handling. The Mini's performance grew exponentially, from its humble 850 cc beginnings in 1959 to the sprightly 1,275 cc powerplant in the Mini Cooper "S" while maintaining its economical essence. Its ventilated disc brakes and close-ratio gearbox allowed it to humble far more powerful competitors, including in the British and European Saloon Car Championships and perhaps, most famously, the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally. Since its discontinuation in 2000, the original Mini has captivated generations and remains highly sought after by collectors, particularly the revered Cooper S variant offered here.

This right-hand-drive, Australian-built example is distinguished by its Morris build plate stating that the Mini was manufactured by British Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia LTD in September 1970. British Leyland Australia was formed in 1969 following BMC Australia's merger with the Leyland Corporation, which had been producing the Mini in Australia since 1961. Beginning in 1965, Australian-built Minis received Hydrolastic suspension, wind-up windows, ignition key operated starters and an improved level of trim and options-years before their British counterparts! This particular Australian Mini Cooper S Mk II wears front and rear Victoria, Australia license plates, and has been neatly restored in blue with a white roof over black vinyl. The green-finished 1,275 cc A-series inline-four presents well inside a clean engine bay, while Dunlop SP tires and silver steel wheels with hubcaps complete the Mini's nice overall presentation. Accompanied by a jack and lug wrench, this tastefully restored Cooper S embodies the very essence of the Mini Cooper legend-compact, nimble, and brimming with character.
